The Special School for Disabled and Rehabilitation Centre (SSDRC) is non profit organisation (a learning and treatment facility for different able children). Created by a group of disability management experts already active in other humanitarian fields, the centre is the only institute of the kind located in the area of Old Sinamangal (near the Pepsi factory) in Kathmandu, SSDRC was founded in October 2010. It is an institution that was designed to provide education, rehabilitation and vocational training to children who have development disorders and other behavioural problems and physical disabilities. It is established to take care of the education and rehabilitation needs of the mentally and/or physically different able children. The primary objective of this centre is to provide different able children an opportunity to learn how to take care of themselves. It is believed that any disability, if properly managed, can be treated and alleviated. Therefore, the person will no longer be a burden to their family, society or the different able person themselves.
SSDRC works with children with intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, autism developmental delays, down syndrome, learning disabilities and other non specific disabilities with a focus on those from economically disadvantaged families. Along with special education the school provides physiotherapy and is aiming to provide occupational therapy, speech therapy, music therapy, dance therapy and play therapy all under one roof. It also provides transportation facilities to drop off and pick up the children. The learning programme is designed to improve the quality of life of children with special needs.
